Nyssa sylvatica

Native to America this slow growing deciduous Black gum Tree has elegant, flouncing branches which form a broadly conical shape over time. Nyssa sylvatica provides a fantastic autumn display, when the foliage turns amazing reds and oranges and becomes a flaming mass of colour before they all fall and reveal complex shapes of bare branches. Known as ‘Tupelo’ in its native country this super plant with ovate leaves is great for woodland gardens, and is a worthy specimen plant, the ‘Sour Gum’ can take up to 20 years to reach its full height, but up to that time it will give you a wonderful interesting specimen year after year. Height: 12m (39′). Spread: 8m (26′).
