Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Thundercloud’

This splendid dark-leaved Sambucus nigra porphyrophylla ‘Thundercloud’ is a popular Elder and has an RHS Award of Garden Merit. With unusual, fragrant red-pink summer flowers, which are replaced by shiny black elderberries, which the birds love in autumn, and finely cut black foliage, Sambucus ‘Thundercloud’ provides plenty of late summer interest and is ideal as a specimen plant or as a vibrant feature in your borders, or cottage garden. Dense and compact with an upright habit, this deciduous shrub enjoys full sun which helps to produce darker leaves. Height: 3m (10′). Spread: 2.5m (8′).
