Corylus maxima Purpurea (Purple Hazelnut) bush
A striking and truly beautiful edible red hazelnut, which is stunning as a visual ornamental plant anyway. Everything about this tree is purple! The new leaves are a gorgeous deep burnished purple colour, and even when older and still a good ruby red.
In Spring it produces lovely pink purple catkins, really different and attractive, followed by it’s deep purple Spring leaf flush. It then produces it’s hazelnuts which again have a lovely purple hue to them – really distinctive.
A fabulous compact tree for mixed borders, hedges, and productive gardens – long season interest with coloured catkins, leaves and nuts. Pick the nuts when still soft, before they harden and turn brown, and they are delicious fresh then, or store well in the fridge.
