Arbutus unedo

A glorious Mediterranean evergreen shrub, eventually forming a small tree, with dark green leathery leaves and clusters of small creamy-white flowers in autumn. The waxy flowers are replaced with small lychee-like fruits which ripen and turn red the following autumn, giving rise to the common name Strawberry Tree. Arbutus unedo also has attractive peeling, cinnamon-coloured bark, and is a spendid specimen in shrub borders, small gardens and low-maintenance gardens. Excellent for dry soils. Height and spread up to: 8m (25′).
