Taxus baccata

There are few more famous sights in the formal British garden or church yard than the English Yew. It is a dense evergreen tree which produces rich green, leathery leaves. In springtime, the male plants produce yellow cones, whereas late summer sees the female trees producing crimson cup-shaped non-edible autumn fruits. The English Yew is remarkable for its tolerance of dry conditions and its hardy constitution. Ideal as a garden hedge or as a backdrop for a herbaceous border, Taxus baccata has certainly earned its prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 20m (66′). Spread: 10m (33′).
