Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea
This variety of Japanese Barberry is distinguished by its density, which makes it an ideal candidate for use as a thick hedge. However, its rounded habit is equally notable, meaning that the hardy shrub can be grown into an excellent specimen plant, perfect for sunny or partially shady borders. Wherever it’s placed, Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea puts on a spectacular, year-round display, which begins with the appearance of its purple, deciduous leaves and yellow, spring flowers and culminates in a smattering of red berries amongst dramatic crimson foliage in the autumn. Height: 1m (3’3); Spread: 2.5m (8’2).
