Arbutus unedo f. rubra
This strawberry tree can also be considered a large shrub or bush. However you choose to grow Arbutus unedo f. rubra, it is sure to excel: the RHS have awarded it an AGM for its outstanding performance in sheltered woodland and costal areas. The tree is hardy once mature, but will require a layer of fleece in the winter during its youth. Once fully grown, you are sure to reap the benefits of this effort, for the plant’s brown bark will take on a red tint and a rough, shedding texture. Attention is drawn away from the trunk in the autumn, when pretty flowers will provide nectar for bees and other pollinators. Perhaps most importantly, these blooms produce strawberry-like fruits, which will reach maturity at the end of the next year’s season. Height: 8m (26’3); Spread: 8m (26’3).
