Sambucus nigra ‘Madonna’
Much like the singer with whom it shares its name, Sambucus nigra ‘Madonna’ is a superstar. This hardy shrub boasts incredible variegated, deciduous leaves, the yellow hue of which fades to a subtle white colour as the season progresses. As if this wasn’t enough, this foliage bears starry blooms in the early summer and dark fruit in the autumn. This fruit expands the Elder’s fan base, for it is appreciated not only by gardeners but also by wildlife, attracting local birds. With all these talents, you might mistake Sambucus nigra ‘Madonna’ for a diva. However, the plant is surprisingly easy to grow, requiring only sunlight in order to take centre stage and shine. Height: 3m (10′). Spread: 2.5m (8′).
