Fothergilla major
Fothergilla major is at its most striking in autumn, when its broadly rounded leaves turn to glowing shades of fiery red and orange. From late spring this deciduous shrub is adorned with fragrant, white bottlebrush flowers, and its superb garden performance has earned it an RHS AGM. Commonly known as the Mountain Witch Alder, this is a slow-growing shrub that enjoys rich and leafy ericaceous soil in acid borders, or at the edge of woodland plantings. It is tolerant of light shade, but its colours are most vibrant in a sunny spot. Height: 2.5m (8′). Spread: 2m (6′).
